How to Earn CUSP Points

NOTE: CUSP Points for iP Utility Safety Conference, Frontline Courses & Webinars and iP Institute Courses will be automatically entered.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

Safety-related education courses that are assigned CEUs

  • Max Points/Yr: Unlimited
  • Points Earned: 1 CEU = 4 CUSP points
  • Documentation required: Registration confirmation email, agenda, certificate or card issued

OTHER SAFETY EDUCATION

Participation in relevant safety-related education & seminars

  • Max Points/Yr: Unlimited
  • Points Earned: 1 contact hour* = 0.4 CUSP points
  • Documentation required: Registration confirmation email, agenda, certificate or card issued

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY COURSES

Relevant safety or management courses

  • Max Points/Yr: Unlimited
  • Points Earned: Max 2 CUSP points per credit hour
  • Documentation required: Copy of transcript

ACHIEVING RELEVANT NEW CERTIFICATIONS

Achieving relevant new safety-related certification.

  • Max Points/Yr: Unlimited
  • Points Earned: Max 30 CUSP points per certificate
  • Documentation required: Copy of certificate, letter or card awarded

VOLUNTEER SERVICE TO SAFETY ORGANIZATION

Volunteer service to safety organization (other than your own company)**

  • Max Points/Yr: 5 CUSP Points
  • Points Earned: Based on hours of volunteer service
  • Documentation required: Letter, meeting minutes, published document or other confirmation of volunteer service

ATTENDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

Attending professional development conference***

  • Max Points/Yr: Unlimited
  • Points Earned: iP Utility Safety Conference & Expo = 20 CUSP points. Others = Max 10 points (Points based on contact hours and content relevance)
  • Documentation required: Copy of registration, confirmation email or letter, agenda or other confirmation of attendance

PUBLICATIONS/ PRESENTATIONS

Must be safety-related

  • Max Points/Yr: 5 CUSP points
  • Points Earned: Up to 5 CUSP points per activity
  • Documentation required: Copy of publication or presentation

PLANNING SAFETY MEETINGS

Planning and facilitating safety meetings. Must be a minimum of 6 meetings per year

  • Max Points/Yr: 5 CUSP points
  • Points Earned: Up to 5 CUSP points for holding at least six meetings.
  • Documentation required: Copy of meeting agendas, minutes or sign-in sheets

COMPANY VPP CERTIFICATION

An OSHA cooperative program

  • Max Points/Yr: 10 CUSP points
  • Points Earned: Certification = 10 CUSP points. Recertification = 5 CUSP points
  • Documentation required: Copy of letter or certificate confirming new certification.

iP INSTITUTE ONLINE

Safety-related online education courses produced by the iP Institute

  • Max Points/Yr:
    Unlimited
  • Points Earned: Up to 1 CUSP point per course
  • Documentation required: Automatically entered into CUSP points log

STORM RESTORATION WORK

Participation in utility storm Restoration work for a major event

  • Max Points/Yr:
    10 CUSP points/year for Green
     5  CUSP points/year for Blue
  • Documentation required: Complete online questionnaire
* A contact hour is equal to one hour of actual time spent in continuing education. Each contact hour must be under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. Breaks, meals and other time spent outside the formal training cannot be counted as contact hours.
** Examples: Service as an officer, board or committee member of a national safety organization; member of an editorial board; or member or chair of a conference organizing committee.
*** Must have safety-related content. Examples: iP Safety Conference, EEI Occupational Health & Safety Conference, SWESE, IUOTA, NSC Congress & Expo, ASSE, Lineman’s Rodeo Safety Conference.

CUSP Annual Maintenance Fee

There is an annual maintenance fee of $140 to maintain your CUSP credential. Failure to pay the CUSP annual maintenance fee will result in the revocation of the CUSP credential.

 The first CUSP annual maintenance fee is due one year after you earn your CUSP credential. You will receive an email reminder when your CUSP annual maintenance fee is due.

Please note that this payment is not the same as the Utility Safety & Ops Leadership (USOLN) membership fee, which is optional.  The USOLN membership fee is also due annually for USOLN members.
